Evidence-led Design Brief and Technical Option
Candidate name
Date
Sample-paper basis
sample design briefs, product images, annotated-development work, technical calculations and extended evaluation
Scope of this paper
The paper targets written design reasoning. It cannot replace the substantial SBA design project.
Candidate instructions
- Complete the design brief and ONE technical option.
- Annotated sketches may be drawn in the answer spaces.
- A design feature earns credit only when linked to user evidence or a technical principle.
Compulsory design brief — Medication dispenser
20 marksUser research (fictional)
- Four of six older users sometimes press twice because they cannot see whether a dose has fallen.
- Two users have hand tremor; one can comfortably operate controls only with a closed fist.
- Carers want a log but users reject cameras and cloud accounts.
- The device must be cleaned weekly and fit a 240 mm × 160 mm shelf.
1(a)
Convert the interview evidence into four ranked design specifications. Each must be measurable and justified.
[8 marks]
1(b)
Develop two distinct concepts using annotated sketches. Compare them with a weighted decision matrix using at least four criteria, then select one without manipulating the scores.
[8 marks]
1(c)
Describe a prototype test for accidental double dispensing. Include sample, procedure, success threshold and one ethical/safety precaution.
[4 marks]
Technical option
15 marksAnswer ONE technical option.
Option A — Electronics and control
2A(a)
A 5.0 V microcontroller output drives an LED rated 2.0 V at 15 mA. Calculate a suitable series resistor and choose from 180 Ω, 220 Ω and 330 Ω. State the resistor's minimum power rating with a safety margin.
[7 marks]
2A(b)
Design control logic that prevents a second dose within four hours but permits an authorised carer override. Include sensor failure and power-loss behaviour.
[8 marks]
Option B — Materials and manufacture
2B(a)
Compare injection-moulded ABS with laser-cut acrylic for a run of 5,000 housings. Consider tooling, unit cost, impact, geometry and end-of-life repair.
[8 marks]
2B(b)
Specify three design-for-manufacture changes and two quality-control checks for the chosen housing.

Every question and figure is original AceDSE work; official samples were used only to calibrate format, complexity and reasoning depth.
Marking guidance is hidden by default and prints only after you reveal it.
